In my experience as a leader in the corporate world, I’ve always challenged the idea that the people I am leading should have their career paths all figured out by themselves.
The reality is, some of us come with a background that limits our capabilities to see ourselves chasing specific opportunities. And as a leader, we have the responsibility to help amazing talent see themselves holding roles they would have never imagined by themselves.
The past few weeks have proven me just that.
Since I reached my network, I have been introduced to opportunities I never thought of as my own career path. Seeing myself through the eyes of people who have worked with me has been a gift. And what’s more important, it is a clear example of how much you can miss out when you give up on nurturing the broad range of skills, experiences, and perspectives diverse talent brings to the table.
This exercise helped me gain clarity and learn more about myself. It is something I would recommend all of you to do every now and then. Check with the people around you:
What do they see in you?
Where else they could see you doing your job?
Is there anything else you could be doing?
And surprise yourself with the opportunities that lay for you in the eye of the other.
